The moment I step into that water, icy and cold, I have taken a step that I cannot undo, and I may fail. While I stay on the soft shores, I remain an unknown, brimming with potential. While I stay on the shores, I will always be a success one day far in the future. But once I take the first step, I become something concrete.

No more dreaming about what might be.

No more shallow affirmations that I have 'potential.'

No more excuses.

That fear cripples me. My legs won't listen to the countless motivational stories I have heard, nor will they respond to my own promptings to step into the water and become what I must. It doesn't matter how much I have prepared. It doesn't matter how much I want to believe that success only comes after failures.

My legs know the worst, and to prevent it, they have wrapped my soft feet in the warm safety of the sand. The last barrier before I start fully living the life I want to live.
